Construction begins on The Whale

After a decade of vision, planning, and collaboration, construction has officially begun on The Whale, a major new attraction located in Andenes, Norways premier whale-watching destination. Designed to become an international landmark, The Whale will unite architecture, art, science, and storytelling in one of the worlds most extraordinary coastal landscapes. Opening is scheduled for 3 June 2027.

From concept to construction

The Whale is Norways most ambitious tourism project to date, with a total investment of NOK 630 million funded by both private and public partners. Following the completion of loan financing, the main construction contract has now been signed with one of Norways leading construction companies, HENT.

Designed by the internationally acclaimed Danish architecture studio Dorte Mandrup, the building rises naturally from the landscape, shaped like a whale or a wave emerging from the sea. It is designed to blend seamlessly with the Arctic surroundings, offering visitors an experience deeply connected to nature, place, and purpose.

–  This is an important day not just for Andenes, but for Northern Norway and beyond, said Benn Eidissen, Chairman of the board at The Whale AS.

–  We are building more than an attraction. We are creating a space for knowledge, reflection, and deep connection with whales and the oceans.

An Experience with global ambition

Inside The Whale, visitors will explore exhibitions designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA), one of the worlds leading experience design firms. The content will blend science, art, and storytelling to explore the oceans ecosystems and the vital role they play in our planets future.

–  The Whale is designed to make people stop, listen, and understand, said Hanne Strager, Head of Exhibitions at The Whale AS.

– Its about creating an emotional and intellectual experience that resonates long after the visit.

Regional value, national significance

The Whale is expected to significantly boost year-round tourism in the region, creating ripple effects for local businesses, employment, and infrastructure. The project is the result of close collaboration between local authorities, private investors, scientific institutions, and national stakeholders.

–  This milestone reflects years of dedication and partnership, said Eidissen.
– Were deeply grateful to Andøy Municipality, Nordland County, our private partners, and the national political leaders who helped make this vision a reality.

Opening in summer 2027

With construction now underway, The Whale is set to open in time for the 2027 summer season.

–  Its both a privilege and a responsibility to shape a project of this scope and significance. We look forward to welcoming the world to Andenes in 2027, said Eidissen.
